When the Real Heroes Took Center Stage: A Seminar for Domestic Helpers’ Health in Greater Noida
We often celebrate the people who climb corporate ladders, launch startups, or win awards. But behind many of those success stories are quiet, unseen hands — making tea before sunrise, packing school lunches, keeping homes spotless. They are the didis who care for our families so we can chase our dreams. Last week in Greater Noida, those real heroes were finally given the spotlight — not for the work they do for us, but for the care they deserve for themselves.
Last week in Greater Noida, something truly heartwarming happened.
For the very first time, a seminar dedicated entirely to the health and
well-being of domestic helpers was organized — a group of women who often put
everyone else’s needs before their own.
The event took place at Eldeco Mystic Green Apartments, thanks to a
beautiful collaboration between the society’s Culture Committee and the
Bougainvillea Art Foundation.
Breaking the Silence Around
Women’s Health
The seminar wasn’t about delivering dry lectures — it was about starting
conversations. Experts spoke openly with domestic helpers about issues that are
often brushed under the carpet.
Sanitary Napkins for Every Helper
Ms. Nandini Rai, Director of Zwik Hygiene, addressed menstrual health
problems in a simple, approachable way that encouraged discussion. She also
distributed sanitary napkins to all the domestic helpers present, ensuring they
walked away not only with vital information but also with essential resources
to care for themselves.
“Knowledge is power, but dignity is just as important — that’s why every woman left with sanitary napkins in hand.”
The Silent Threat: Cervical
Cancer
The event’s organizer, Dr. Kaynat Kazi — who is the founder of BAF — shared
some sobering facts. Cervical cancer, she said, is on the rise in India, and
every seven minutes, one woman loses her life to it.
“This disease creeps in silently,” she explained. “Our next step is to set up
free screening camps so that early detection can save lives.”
Dr. Kazi also spoke from the heart:
“Women care for their families tirelessly, but rarely put their own health
first. They endure discomfort quietly, without sharing it. If we can get the
right information to them at the right time, we can prevent so much suffering.”
Why Domestic Helpers?
The focus on domestic helpers was deliberate. In a busy, modern city like
Greater Noida, where both men and women in households are out working, it’s the
helpers who keep everything running at home.
“The truth is, the shining careers we build wouldn’t be possible without these
unsung heroes — the ‘didis’ who keep our homes in order. It’s only right that
we think about their health too,” Dr. Kazi said.
Community Spirit in Action
Priyanka Gupta, in-charge of the Culture Committee, shared how the
residents came together to make this happen. Women from every family gave their
helpers an hour off so they could attend the seminar — and encouraged them to
take part without hesitation.
A big thanks also goes to Mrs. Pooja Rajput, Rajni, and Swati, who played
key roles in organizing the event and making sure the women felt comfortable
opening up about menstrual health.
More Than Just a Seminar
This wasn’t just an awareness program. It was a reminder that caring for
the people who care for us is not charity — it’s responsibility. And on that
day, the real heroes of many homes walked away a little more informed, a little
more confident, equipped with sanitary napkins, and hopefully, a little more
valued.
